Spider Punk Hot Toys Figure Review

Over the years Hot Toys has released some pretty amazing Spider-Man figures, with everything from the classic costume, to the mystical black and gold suit from No Way Home to more obscure versions like the metal-bending cyborg Spider-Man figure. Yet there’s pretty much nothing as bizarrely awesome as this mohawk toting, guitar-wielding bad ass Spider-Punk Hot Toys figure.

If you haven’t heard of the character before (and let’s face it, unless you’re the most hardcore Spider-Nerd, chances are you haven’t) Spider-Punk hails from the alternate Earth-138 and is the alter ego of Hobart Brown, a homeless teenager who gains incredible powers after being being by a radioactive spider. First appearing in Amazing Spider-Man #10 back in 2014, Spider-Punk was created by writer Dan Slott and artist Olivier Coipel. Originally the pair had planned for him to be a UK-based hero (complete with cockney accent and East London attitude), but that idea was scrubbed and he eventually appeared as a full on New York metal head.

Spider-Punk later appeared in several other formats, including the Ultimate Spider-Man vs. The Sinister 6 animated series, a playable character in Spider-Man Unlimited mobile game and unlockable Spider-Punk costume in Marvel’s Spider-Man for the PlayStation 4.

Over the past few years, the character has continued to grow in popularity, later appearing as a Marvel Legends action figure, a Diamond select statue and even scoring his very own Funko.

Now, Hobart’s finally made it to the big leagues, stealing the spotlight with this Spider-Punk Hot Toys figure that brings this hardcore hero to life.

THE SPECS

As with all Hot Toys 1:6 scale figures, Spider Punk stands a little under 12-inches tall and is sculpted with an insane level of detail and paintwork. The figure also has 30 unique articulation points in the arms, legs, torso and neck, which offers some real versatility when it comes to displaying him, whether he’s swinging overhead or bashing a web-coated guitar on the ground.

  • Height: 11.81″
  • Width: 9″
  • Depth: 15″
  • Weight: 2 lbs

WHAT IT COMES WITH

One of the coolest features of the Spider-Punk Hot Toys figures is undoubtedly the head sculpt. The mohawk-style metal spikes in particular are even better than I’d hope and are solidly constructed and really make the figure stand out. The figure also comes with three different eyepieces to create a variety of facial expressions and again really gives Spider-Punk some bad ass attitude. In addition to the head sculpt and three eyepieces, the figure also includes:

  • x12 interchangeable hands with web pattern, including:
    • x1 pair of fists
    • x1 pair of open hands
    • x1 pair of web-shooting hands
    • x1 pair of relaxed hands
    • x1 pair of gesturing hands
    • x1 pair of guitar picking hands

Let’s face it though, no punk is complete without their blue jean jacket and kicks, and this is really what makes the figure. The jean fabric is impressively realistic and the tiny buttons on the jacket are particularly well done. The full costume includes:

  • x1 blue denim vest with buttons and spikes on the back
  • x1 pair of spike bracelets (these are particularly awesome)
  • x1 pair of red and white sneakers

The accessories that come with Spider-Punk are also probably some of my favorite out of any of the Hot Toys figures I own and really checked all the boxes in terms of my love of both comic books and 90s thrash metal. In particular you get:

  • x1 red guitar with sweet web pattern
  • x5 web strands (in different shapes and lengths, attachable to the web-shooters)
  • x1 open spider web effect accessory
  • x1 spider drone

The figure also comes with a pretty solid base that includes the name and logo from the Marvel’s Spider-Man PS4 game.

THE PRICE

As most collectors are well aware Hot Toys can be pretty pricey, and the Spider-Punk figure is no exception. It’s likely to run you at least $400 USD after shipping and handling. That being said, it’s a small price to pay for one of the most weirdly awesome Spider-Man versions of all time. It’s also worth noting that these bad boys sold out pretty quickly when they were first release (I managed to get my web shooters on one during the early release and avoid the waitlist).

MY RATING

With its unique aesthetics, bad ass accessories and high-quality design, the Spider-Punk Hot Toys figure is the ultimate collectible for fans of both Black Flag and Black Suit Spidey. Like mosh pits and the Misfits, It’s definitely not for everyone, but if you’re looking for something a little more metal with your webcrawler, you can’t go wrong with this face-melting fig.
