Hot Toys Cyborg Spider-Man Review

When it comes to Hot Toys Spider-Man figures, there are plenty to choose from, with everything from the classic red and blue design to more off the beaten-path figures like Spider-Punk. One that might have slipped under your radar, however, is the new Hot Toys Cyborg Spider-Man fig.

Not to be confused with the Earth 2818 Spider-Man (who is actually a half-machine, half-man construct from a parallel Earth), cyborg spider-man was actually first introduced in comic books back in 1992 in Spider-Man #21, which was written and illustrated by the legendary Erik Larsen. In the comic, Peter Parker becomes severely injured while battling the Sinister Six and slaps on a number of temporary cybernetic components to help him get back into the fight.

A short lived, albeit amazing concept, Cyborg Spidey was little more than a blip on the radar for most Marvel fans. That is, until the costume was resuscitated in 2018 as a bonus unlockable costume in the PS4 video game Marvel’s Spider-Man. Cyborg Spider-Man’s rebirth continuned shortly after, appearing as a Marvel Legends action figure and even snagging his very own Funko.

Now enter Hot Toys Cyborg Spider-Man figure, which pays homage to both the classic Erik Larsen cover and the video game.

Spider-Man #21

Featuring a masked head sculpt with an LED light-up eyes and multiple interchangeable eyepieces to create different combinations of Spider-Man’s expressions. Spider-Man features a greatly poseable figure body with cybernetic left arm specially painted in metallic color, a skillfully tailored Cyborg Spider-Man suit following a blue and red color scheme with utility belt and battle damage effects, interchangeable hands for iconic postures, assorted web effect accessories, and a dynamic figure stand for display uses.

Featuring a very cool masked head sculpt and a variety of eyepieces and accessories, this may just be one of my all-time favorite Hot Toys Spider-Man figures and one that looks amazing next to my own well-read copy of Erik Larsen’s Spider-Man #21.

THE SPECS

As a standard Hot Toys 1:6 scale figure, Cyborg Spider-Man standards just under 12-inches, which for me is just the perfect size for these bad boys (especially considering that I often display my next to comics). As I’ve come to expect, the level of detail and sheer artistry is practically flawless, with everything the paint work to the sculpting and accessories incredibly polished. Cyborg Spidey figure also has 30 unique articulation points (which is pretty standard for most Hot Toy figures), so there’s a ton of options here for poses and display.

WHAT IT COMES WITH

Featuring a custom masked head sculpt, the thing that absolutely blew me away is the fact that the Cyborg Spidey’s bionic eye includes an LED that lights up, which is just so damn cool. The figure also comes with three different eyepieces to create a variety of expressions. I particularly love the cybernetic left arm and while I would have preferred that it be made of actual metal, Hot Toys did a great job with the paint work on it. In addition to the head sculpt and three eyepieces, you also get the following:

  • x10 interchangeable hands, including:
    • x1 pair of fists
    • x1 pair of opened hands
    • x1 pair of web-shooting hands
    • x1 pair of swinging web hands
    • x1 pair of gesture hands

The costume is also pretty sweet, with a solid level of detail, particularly on the headband and banages. With the costume you also get:

  • x1 battle damaged red and blue suit
  • x1 utility belt with pouches (eat your heart out, Cable/Batman)

In typical Hot Toys fashion, there are also a number of accessories that bring the figure to life (because let’s face it, what Spidey fan didn’t lose their mind when they saw this costume on the big screen for the first time). In particular you get:

  • x6 web strings (attachable to web shooters)
  • x1 open spider web effect accessory

The Hot Toys Cyborg Spider-Man figure also comes with a base stand which might be one of the real quibbles I have with the statue. It features the standard video game logo and character nameplate, but it’s a little on the dull side and doesn’t really stand out (particularly given the dynamic materials used in other Hot Toy bases). That being said, that’s a very minor complaint considering just how awesome everything else is with this figure.

THE PRICE

As I’ve noted before in other reviews, Hot Toys can be expensive, and this particular Spider-Man fig is retailing for $270 before shipping. That being said, it’s also one of the coolest Spidey figures I own yet and something that I just had to own being a huge fan of the original Erik Larsen comic that inspired the fig.

MY RATING

With its amazing design, unique accessories (including a cool LED light eye bionic eye) and gorgeous details, the Hot Toys Cyborg Spider-Man figure may just be the crowning jewel in my growing collection. As a throwback to a classic comic book cover and a nod to the solid PS4 video game, this figure stands tall as proof that you really can’t keep a battle-damaged Spidey down for long.
