Sideshow Collectibles Batman Who Laughs Statue may just do something I never thought I’d see out of a Dark Knight figure: scare the living s**t out of me. Seriously, get up close to this thing and it actually looks like it might just come alive and bite your face off. Which of course is also what I love most about it being a fan of both horror and Batman.
If you haven’t heard of the Batman Who Laughs before, he actually first appeared in the Dark Days and Dark Nights comic book series and was created by the dynamic DC duo of writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo. He’s essentially an evil “Jokerized” version of Batman who hails from the Dark Multiverse and exists solely to bring chaos and destruction to all of existence.
Since his first appearance, the Batman Who Laughs has become incredibly popular, with everything form his own Funko Pop! to, so it’s not surprising that Sideshow created this premium format statue.
THE SPECS
There are actually two versions of this statue: the Collector Edition and the slightly more expensive Exclusive version (which is the one I snagged). The latter comes with an interchangeable arm and head, which in my opinion was definitely worth the extra cost as it does provide some more options for posing.
This particular Batman Who Laughs statue was actually designed by artist Richard Luong (who’s also done some of my favorite Sideshow art prints) with sculpting work by Rafael Grassetti (who’s actually since become the Art Director on Sony’s God of War series).
This sculpt itself is definitely a big one, standing tall at a whopping 24″. It’s also constructed out a mix of polystone and metal, which definitely gives it some serious weight, so if you do decide to shell out for this bad boy, make sure you have enough room to display him properly and keep him supported (I had to clear most of a book shelf and even then he just had enough clearance to fit).
- Height: 24″
- Width: 14.5″
- Depth: 10″
- Weight: 24 lbs
WHAT IT COMES WITH
If you end up with the standard Collectors format, what you see is pretty much what you get and after a bit of assembly the whole thing is ready to go right of the box. The Exclusive Edition Batman Who Laughs statue on the other hand, includes an additional axe-wielding left hand and a second head that features the psychotic reality-bending villain offering a bone-chilling smile. Both are definitely worth the extra few bucks to shell out for.
One of the things I also love is the display, which is one of the best Sideshow bases I’ve seen yet. It’s textured, gritty and super realistic and really helps bring the whole piece together.
THE PRICE
Like any Sideshow product, the Batman Who Laughs statue isn’t cheap and you’re going to run well over $800 USD for it, including shipping. That being said, in my opinion it’s more than worth it for the level of detail, quality and sheer awesomeness of this statue. And as the Batman Who Laughs continues to grow in popularity, I could see these sick puppies fetching even more value on the secondary collectors market (especially given that Sideshow has a limited run on them).
FINAL THOUGHTS
Based on one of the Dark Knights most terrifying new foes, Sideshow Collectibles Batman Who Laughs statue is honestly a work of pure nerdy art. With its stunning details, beautiful paintwork and massive size, it’s definitely worth the hefty price tag and clearing out large area you’ll need to display it. Just don’t be surprised if you end up a little creeped out getting up close and personal with this work of pure monstrous beauty.
