Sideshow Power Girl Statue Preview

With this latest Sideshow Power Girl statue, will DC Comics blonde bombshell finally get the respect she deserves?

Power Girl might be one of DC comics most misunderstood characters. Largely viewed as a one-dimensional character designed to placate drooling sex-starved fanboys, she’s perhaps best known for her revealing outfits and rather large… ahem… assets.

Yet the character has evolved over the years and become more than just some cheesecake, cleavage-sporting pin-up girl. Also known as Kara Zor-L (or by her alter ego Karen Starr), Power Girl first appeared in All Star Comics #58 back in 1976 as Superman’s cousin hailing from the alternate Earth-Two reality and possessing similar powers to the legendary Kryptonian hero. Over the years, her backstory has been retconned and tweaked numerous times (including at one point making her an Atlantean), but the basic core of the character has become more complex and nuanced, turning Power Girl into a dynamic and unique superhero whose made her mark in DC history.

Enter the new Sideshow Power Girl Premium Format figure, a gorgeous new statue which does a tasteful job of showing off the characters curves (which let’s face it, are probably what most fans are going to buy the figure for) while also paying tribute to a character that’s more than just a pretty face.

THE SPECS

Like a lot of Sideshow’s Premium Format figures, the Power Girl statue is impressively large, standing at well over 25-inches in height and weighing an whopping 15-pounds. As with many Sideshow polyresin figs of this size, you’ll definitely plenty of room to display it. Developed by longtime Sideshow sculptors Will Harbottle, Ian MacDonald and Richard Luong, the statue also features gorgeous paintwork by Kat Sapene. What I really like about this figure is that it’s a great representation of Power Girl, but isn’t just mindless eye candy, like so many versions of the character have been. It has more depth, nuance and personality than any almost rendition of Power Girl I’ve seen in either comic books or figures.

WHAT IT COMES WITH

While with the standard Collectors version of Power Girl Premium Format Figure what you see is what you get, with the slightly more expensive Exclusive Edition you receive an extra interchangeable head which features a smiling version of Kara Zor-L. The base that comes with both versions, however, looks very cool, with a swirling cloud trailing behind her.

THE PRICE

Available now for pre-order, the Exclusive edition is probably going to run you over $650 USD after shipping and handling. That being said, these statues always end up going for way more on eBay and the secondary market (I’ve signed up for the waitlist to get my hands on one as soon as it’s released). If cash is a bit tight, you can always go with Sideshow’s layaway program (which I’ve personally used in the past and have always been happy with).

FINAL THOUGHTS

With the Sideshow Power Girl statue, a character that’s often been known more for her physical appearance is finally given the treatment she deserves, and I for one can’t wait to add this stunning new figure to my collection.
