Why are Hot Toys So Expensive?

If you’re a fan of collectibles, chances are you’ve heard of Hot Toys. The Hong Kong-based company has quickly become one of the most popular manufacturers of high-end action figures in the world, with products costing hundreds or even thousands of dollars. All of which begs the question: just why are Hot Toys so expensive?

The short answer is that they’re extremely high quality, they’re highly sought after by collectors, they’re painstakingly handmade, they have limited production runs, and they’re based on popular entertainment brands.

Six Reasons Why Hot Toys are So Expensive

Let’s take a look a little bit more closely at the reasons behind Hot Toys hefty price tags.

1. They’re extremely high quality

The average Hot Toy is far superior to virtually any toy you’ll find on the market, using the highest quality materials and production processes to achieve their hyper realistic look and feel. Everything from the packaging to the final piece itself is given the highest level of detail and attention. In fact, Hot Toys own production processes continually improve, only adding to their quality (one need only look at some of the very first Hot Toys produced to see just how far they’ve come). As with other items that are finely made, the cost also goes up.

2. They’re highly sought after by collectors

Over the past few years Hot Toys has become more of a household name among collectors and pop culture fans. The brand is now distributed by the US-based company Sideshow Collectibles which has further expanded their reach and appeal. This increased popularity has allowed the company to raise their prices.

3. They’re handmade and hand painted

While a traditional toy or action figure is usually mass produced using assembly line technology, Hot Toys are painstakingly sculpted and painted by hand. This process means that can take hundreds of hours to complete a single figure. As with other handmade items, the cost goes up as highly-skilled artists need to be employed to carry out this work. In fact, Hot Toys maintains a dedicated team of sculptors and painters at their South Korea location.

4. They have limited production runs

With most Hot Toys figures having a limited run between 2,000 – 3,000 versions for their entire global distribution network. This scarcity leads to a simple supply and demand issue that can increase the cost. Additionally, as the popularity of Hot Toys has grown the limited nature of the action figures has only further increased their demand leading to higher costs.

5. They’re produced overseas

While Hot Toys is based in Hong Kong, most of their production occurs in their South Korean facilities. This means that their final products have to be shipped overseas to Western and European retailers, which means that added shipping costs, taxes and duties have to applied. These added costs are then passed along to consumers.

6. They’re based on popular (and expensive) IPs

Currently, Hot Toys has licenses with some of the biggest and most beloved intellectual properties in the world, including Marvel, Star Wars, Harry Potter and DC. Purchasing the rights to use these characters isn’t cheap and these costs are in turn folded into the final price of the figure. If Hot Toys still produced generic military figures (which is how the company first started out in 2000), no doubt they would be significantly cheaper than purchasing the Mandalorian or Captain America.

(For more information on pricing, read our blog How much do Hot Toys cost?)

Are Hot Toys a Good Investment?

If you’re wondering whether Hot Toys are a good investment, you’re not alone. After all, if you’re dropping hundreds of dollars on an action figure, you’d like to know that it’ll retain or even grow it’s value, regardless of how awesome it might be.

The good news is that Hot Toys do indeed seem to be a solid investment for collectors. While data on this is a bit scarce, you need only look at recent eBay sales to see just how how much value these figures can acquire over time.

Take for instance this Hot Toys Black Suit Spider-Man figure which retailed for around $200 upon release and now fetches several hundred dollars more on eBay and the local collectors market. This Hot Toys Thanos Infinity War figure is another example of a figure that’s still available for purchase from Sideshow, but has shot up in value a few years after its release.

And while most collectors are buying these items because they love them, there’s no doubt that there’s a brisk online trade of individuals flipping Hot Toys figures for a tidy profit. So it’s likely that Hot Toys do go up in value on a regular basis.

Amazingly, many of the latest Hot Toy releases sell out extremely quickly, particularly for limited editions. This is likely going to be the case for the foreseeable future, so if you’re looking to get in on the latest figures, you’ll likely want to check the Sideshow Collectibles website as often as possible.

There’s no doubt that Hot Toys figures are extremely expensive items, and not something that casual collectors on a budget are likely to be able to afford. That being said, for those who manage to snag these rare items, there’s also no doubt that they have an incredible piece of fandom that’s well worth the price. 4. BigBadToyStore: As one of the most popular online toy distributors in the world, BBTS does carry a wide range of Hot Toys. As with other distributors, however, selection can vary

Batman Sanity Statue from XM Studios

When choosing the ultimate Batman statue, there’s no doubt there’s some serious contenders to choose from. This epic Batman Sanity statue from XM Studios, however, make just be the one Bat to rule them all.

Based on a concept from legendary DC artist David Finch, the Batman Sanity statue is a jaw-droppingly 1:6 scale diorama, making it both beautiful and also one of the largest pieces you’re likely to see.

Featuring a montage of the Dark Knight surrounded by his greatest foes and rendered in incredible detail, each Batman Sanity piece is molded from cold-cast porcelain and hand painted using two coats of museum-calibre finishing. The statue is also hard to come by and is limited to just 400 versions.

There’s also a black and white “smoke” version of the Batman Sanity statue, which is fully painted and includes more weathering and detailing work (there’s only a few hundred of these available – making them an even more sought after collectible).

Sharp eyed Bat fans may noticed that one critical Batman villain is missing: the Riddler. Apparently the designers added a small easter egg to the statue to call out Batman’s favorite question mark wearing nemesis, so take a closer look and see if you can spot it.

THE SPECS

  • Height: 25″
  • Width: 40″
  • Weight: 54 lbs.

THE COST

During its initial release, the Batman Sanity statue was running for around $2,300 USD, plus at least another $600 USD in shipping, which definitely puts them on the higher end for most collectors. Sadly, they’ve since been sold out, which means the only place you can probably find one today is in a LCS or speciality shop near you, or on eBay, where one will likely set you back around $4,000 to $5,000 USD. That’s a small price to pay though for having what is arguably the greatest Batman statue ever made.

What is Sideshow Collectibles?

Sideshow Collectibles is an American specialty manufacturer of movie, film, television and collectible action figures, statues, and high end pieces. Today, the company has become of one the most popular brands in the growing field of entertainment-based collectibles.

When was Sideshow Collectibles founded?

Founded in 1994, Sideshow started out creating prototypes for a variety of major toy companies; including Mattel, Galoob and Wild Planet. In 1999, however, the company began marketing its own line of collectibles and specialty toy products.

Sideshow’s first wave of toys was the now much-beloved Universal Classic Monsters series, a line of 8″ action figures based on the popular film creatures, which were sold primarily through Toys R Us and a handful of other smaller retailers.

The company later began to refine their production process, using a combination of concept art and digital rendering using a rapid prototyping machine. Afterwards each sculpture was then refined and painted by hand – a process which continues to this day.

With the success of their products and rave reviews from serious collectors, Sideshow quickly pivoted from action figure, and began creating items in the popular sixth-scale format, which were primarily sold through specialty markets. To keep with this higher end feel, the company rebranded from “Sideshow Toys” to “Sideshow Collectibles”, a name which they have since maintained.

With a reputation for detail and quality, Sideshow quickly expanded and secured licenses with numerous major Hollywood and entertainment players, including Marvel, Disney, Lucasfilm, DC and Activision-Blizzard.

Today, Sideshow’s products are primarily currently sold in comic book shops and specialty stores in North America, but the company also maintains a brisk online trade and continues to expand aggressively with new licenses and products. Currently, it’s estimated that roughly 90% of the collectibles Sideshow makes are for licensed film, television, comic book and video game properties.

Are Sideshow Collectibles worth it?

With the explosive growth of the collectables market over the past few years (particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic) many of Sideshow’s statues have seen significant growth in value, particularly for characters with new film or television properties. While Sideshow products can be expensive (with some in the $2,000 or more price range), the limited number of products, their durability and quality means that most are able to grow their value overtime (we cover some of this in our blog post Is Sideshow Collectibles legit?).

Is Sideshow Collectibles the same as Hot Toys?

Hot Toys is also recognized as one of the world’s most popular collectible statue and figure manufacturers. They are, however, a separate company that’s based out of Hong Kong. Sideshow Collectibles has the exclusive distribution rights for Hot Toys in the United States, North and South America, Europe, Australia and throughout some parts of Asia. For this reason, many collectors mistakenly believe that Hot Toys and Sideshow are the same company. Notably, Sideshow is also the official US distributor of Iron Studios statues, figures and toys.

Where are Sideshow Collectibles based out of?

Sideshow Collectible’s head office is located in Newbury Park in California (just outside Los Angeles). While the office appears nondescript from the outside, inside it’s packed with an incredible range of statues, figures and life-sized sculptures. Manufacturing is handled both within their US facility and in overseas locations.

Why are Sideshow statues so expensive?

The simple answer is that you get what you pay for. Sideshow statues are hand painted and require an extensive amount of time and skill to create. The size of the statues, the limited number available and sheer popularity of the licenses involved, all play a factor in determining pricing. Like any piece of art, collectors are paying for both rarity and asthetics. Shipping can also drive up the cost, given the size and protective requirements for packaging. That being said, as noted above, many of Sideshow’s figures end up being a solid financial investment. It’s also worth noting that the company does offer flexible payment plans so you don’t have to break the bank picking up your latest collectible.

New Conan Statue from Mezco Toyz

By Crom, this statue is gorgeous! We here at the Nerd Hoard recently got our grubby little mitts on the Static Six: Conan the Cimmerian statue from the good people at Mezco Toyz. Everyone’s favorite blood-spattered barbarian has never looked better and this 1:6 format premium figure is honestly a must-have for Conan fans (it also looks great matched with our original Savage Sword of Conan #1 from 1974).

The Specs

Let’s face, Conan is one big barbarian, and this statue captures that perfectly, standing at 12″ tall and weighing in at a hefty 8 lbs. (much of which is from the base). The figure is also pretty wide, so make sure you have a decently sized display area that can support it.

  • Height: 12″
  • Width: 10″
  • Depth: 11″
  • Weight: 8 lbs

What It Comes With

While there are plenty of other Conan statues on the market, you’d be hard pressed to find one that has an almost action-figure like versatility as this one. In fact, this particular Conan statue comes with a variety of interchangeable parts, all of which can be easily swapped out and are quite sturdy thanks to powerful built in magnets.

  • x2 heads (stare and roar)
  • x1 broadsword (affixed to arm) and sheath with real metal chain
  • x1 battle axe (affixed to arm)
  • x1 dagger (affixed to hand)

The Price

While this Conan statue isn’t exactly cheap (probably run you around $200 – $300 USD), that’s actually incredibly good considering how expensive other comparable figures that can easily run you north of $1,000 and don’t necessarily have the same flexibility of poses and accessories as this statue.

Our Rating

With incredible details, interchangeable accessories and a solid price point, Mezco’s stunning Conan statue is a must-have for fans of the legendary barbarians and anyone looking to get into the collector market with.
