Weekly Top 10 Comic Book Spec Picks (04/08/22)

Each week we break out the hottest comic book specs that have seen movement in the market and an increase in demand and value. From newly released modern books picking up heat to back issues that have gone from dollar bin fodder to top dollar investments, we cover it all. Below is our list of the Top 10 comic book specs on the move for the week of April 8th, 2022.

The cover to the Spider-Punk #1 comic book spec.

1. Spider-Punk #1 (1:50 Variant)

One of the new Marvel comics this week, this amazing variant by Takashi Okazaki is already fetching almost $100 on eBay. This guitar-wielding webhead has gone from being a largely forgettable character to appearing in video games and even a new Spider-Punk Hot Toys figure, so it’s possible this book still could see a lift, assuming the character remains popular and continues to rock out with his Doc Ock out.

The cover to the Marvel Spotlight #28 comic book spec featuring Moon Knight.

2. Marvel Spotlight #28

Moon Knight series on Disney+, the character continues to pick up steam (including snagging a sweet new Moon Knight Hot Toys figure and Moon Knight statue from Sideshow). If the first appearance of Moon Knight in Werewolf By Night #32 is out of your price range (and with raw copies going for well over $4K, it probably is) then MK’s first solo appearance in this book might be the next best thing, with raw, high-grade copies going for around $200-$300 on eBay.

The cover to the Silver Surfer #8 comic book spec.

3. Silver Surfer #8

The Kree scientist Pap-Tonn is a fairly lesser known character in the Marvel universe, but his first appearance in this book has raised some interest with word that British actor Colin Stoneley is playing the character in the upcoming MCU film The Marvels. You can still snag this book for under $10 (or even dollar bins) so this is one spec worth keeping an eye on and picking up if you can still get on the cheap.

The cover to the Werewolf by Night #1 comic from 2020.

4. Werewolf by Night #1

As the first appearance of the Jake Gomez Werewolf by Night character, this book has seen a renewed level of interest from comic speculators as Disney+ confirmed that Werewolf by Night would appear in an upcoming Halloween special starring Gael Garcia Bernal. Throw in rumors that Werewolf by Night may also appear in the new Moon Knight TV series and this is a book that’s probably worth picking up now in the $30-$50 range before it spikes.

The cover to the comic Crisis on Infinite Earths #1.

5. Crisis on Infinite Earths #1

With a ton of first appearances (including the Ted Kord version of the Blue Beetle and the Monitor) this has been a popular but affordable key. Prices, however, are spiking with rumors that DC is setting up a “Crisis” like event in the upcoming Flash movie that will carry over into other DC films. It’s a bit of a long shot, but you can still pick a decent copy of this book up for less than $20, so it’s a safe spec that’s worth grabbing now.

The cover to West Coast Avengers #56.

6. West Coast Avengers #56

The first cover appearance of “Dark Scarlet” (an evil alternate version of the Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff) this book is now fetching anywhere form $30-50 after Sam Raimi confirmed this week that multiple Scarlet Witch variants would be featured in the upcoming Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness film.

The cover to Secret Avengers #19.

7. Secret Avengers #19

The debut of the “business suit” version of the Moon Knight costume, this book has started to see movement after the second episode of the new Disney+ show. With copies going for around the $30-40 mark on eBay, there may be a bit more room to grow on this book, but chances are it’ll hold steady, so it’s another spec pick worth picking up if you can grab it on the cheap.

The cover to Paranormal Hitmen #1.

8. Paranormal Hitmen #1

If you’re like most collectors, chances are you haven’t even heard of this under-the-radar book, which follows the exploits of two hitmen who are recruited to hunt down and kill ghosts, while dodging bullets and flesh-and-blood mobsters. Producers from eOne recently announced they had optioned the book for a TV series. Of course, Hollywood is littered with the ghosts of optioned comics that ended up in development limbo, but you can still pick this book up for under $10, making it a low risk spec bet (and a cool read from the sounds of it).

The cover to Strange Academy #16.

9. Strange Academy #16

Strange Academy once again picks up some spec heat with the introduction of the werewolf character Howie (which some believe will be tied into some larger story arcs). As a result, what was a cover price book has suddenly shot up to a $20-30 title. That’s probably overkill, but if you can still grab this for cover price, you definitely should.

The cover to Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man #1.

10. Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man #1

With buzz around a possible live action Miles Morales film continuing to grow (and the character remaining incredibly popular in comic form). With the first appearance of Miles Morales in Ultimate Fallout #4 now out of price range for most collectors, this book has seen some major sales with a high-grade raw copy likely going to cost you $200-300 or more. This is one spec book though that’s likely to continue to see serious growth in value.
