Weekly Top 10 Comic Book Spec Picks (03/25/22)

Each week Comic Book Invest (CBSI) puts out their Top 10 list of comic books that have seen an increase in speculation and investing. Below we take a closer look at that list and offer our own take on each of the comics featured for March 25th, 2022.

1. Nova #1

With a Marvel Nova movie all but certain (after a somewhat promising start in the Guardians of the Galaxy films) this book continues to climb, with CBSI reporting sales for a 9.8 in the $2,700 range. (Really wishing I’d picked this up earlier when it was still affordable).

2. New Avengers #40 (2008)

This book marks the first appearance of Veranke, Queen of the Skrull Empire (who Twitter rumors claim Emilia Clarke will be playing in an upcoming Marvel film). CBSI is reporting sales of around $50. Probably too early to spec on this one, but if you can find it on the cheap, I’d grab it.

3. Marvel Point One #1

Marketing the first appearance of the Sam Alexander Nova character, CBSI is reporting that raw copies are going for around $50 and a 9.8 is holding at about $400, with comic book speculators hedging their bets on which version of Nova will appear in the MCU.

4. Voltron #1

With news of a live action Voltron movie in the works (with Red Notice’s Rawson Marshall Thurber attached to co-write and direct it) CBSI reports that the book is now going for around $100 raw with 9.8 copies selling in the $400 range. (I’d take this one with a giant robot cat sized grain of salt as Voltron fans have been burned in the past).

5. Superior Spider-Man #17 (1:50 Variant)

CBSI reports that raws are now going for $450 and a 9.8 recently snagged $1,000. It’s a gorgeous cover (with a real Alex Ross vibe to it) but this one seems way overpriced for now.

6. Punisher #1 (2022) – Tyler Kirkham Variant

The new Punisher book has been picking up some heat (due to the fact that Frank Castle is ditching his iconic logo and now working for the Hand). CBSI reports this variant is going for $60. Personally, this seems a flash in the pan (and I’m not a fan of the new logo).

7. Ms. Marvel #5 (2014)

With the Disney+ show coming soon, interest in Ms. Marvel and Kamala Khan has never been higher. CBSI reports that raw copies of this issue are going for around $50 (although its debatable if those prices will hold).

8. Morbius: The Living Vampire #1

With interest in Morbius growing before the release of the movie (which looks pretty terrible, in my opinion) CBSI is reporting that this book is now going for about $20 raw and and $200 for a 9.8. I’d flip these books now before the movie tanks.

9. Mystic Arcana: Magik #1

CBSI reports that this book has doubled in value recently and is going for $40 raw. Considered to be somewhat of a first appearance of Ammut (the Egyptian God featured in the Marvel Universe), fans seem to be betting that Ammut will make an appearance in the Moon Knight TV series.

10. Panorama of Hell Graphic Novel

I honestly have never heard of this graphic novel, but CBSI is reporting the three different copies of this manga sold in a short period of time (reaching a max of $300). I’d skip this one, but it’s interesting to see these weird books show up on CBSI’s list
