The 20 Best Doctor Doom Comic Covers

When it comes to comic book supervillains, there are few as iconic as the legendary Victor von Doom. And while there are countless key issues featuring the machinations of the good doctor, in this list we’re looking solely at the best Doctor Doom comic covers of all time. In other words, these issues were selected based their incredible cover art and not because they feature a key moment in Doctor Doom’s long (and occasionally bloody) history. To keep things simple we’ve listed the books in chronological publication date, along with estimated prices and details on why we chose each issue.

But enough mindless prattle! Prepare to fire up the Latverian national anthem and kneel before the might of… the 20 best Doctor Doom comic covers ever made!

1. Fantastic Four #57

  • Estimated Price: $775 USD (Raw High Grade)
  • Why It’s a Key: Iconic Jack Kirby cover
  • Why We Picked It: The name of Doom is pretty much synonymous with Jack Kirby, whose unique visual style truly brought the masked despot to life. Case in point: this incredible action-packed work of art that remains not only one of the best Doctor Doom covers of all time, but one of the greatest classic comic book covers.

2. Daredevil #37

  • Published: February 1968
  • Estimated Price: $165 USD (Raw High Grade)
  • Why It’s a Key: Classic battle of Daredevil and Dr. Doom
  • Why We Picked It: While Victor von Doom is best known for his epic slug fests with the Fantastic Four, in this classic Gene Colan cover he goes toe-to-toe with old horn head himself, which incidentally also puts it squarely in the running for one of the best Daredevil comic book covers of all time.

3. Marvel Super-Heroes #20

  • Published: May 1969
  • Estimated Price: $1K USD (Raw High Grade)
  • Why It’s a Key: Solo story featuring Dr. Doom

4. Hero for Hire #9

  • Published: May 1973
  • Estimated Price: $50 USD (Raw High Grade)
  • Why It’s a Key: Classic issue in which Luke Cage storms Doctor Doom’s castle to collect $200 he’s owed for tracking down several of Doom’s missing robots
  • Why We Picked It: Not only is this issue amazing because of it’s hilarious story arc, but for our money you can’t beat this classic Doctor Comic cover by the great Marvel artist Billy Graham.

5. Super-Villain Team-Up #1

  • Published: August 1975
  • Estimated Price: $40 USD (Raw High Grade)
  • Why It’s a Key: Dr. Doom teams up with Namor
  • Why We Picked It: Even a reclusive super-powered despot needs a buddy from time to time. And that’s exactly what readers got in this classic issue that sees Doc Doom team up with the Sub-Mariner. For us though, this issue landed on our list because of the absolutely stunning cover art by the great John Buscema.

6. Uncanny X-Men #145

  • Published: May 1981
  • Estimated Price: $20 USD (Raw High Grade)
  • Why It’s a Key: Classic battle between Dr. Doom and the X-Men

8. Fantastic Four #247

  • Estimated Price: $12 USD (Raw High Grade)
  • Why It’s a Key: 1st appearance of Kristoff Vernard, the adopted son of Dr. Doom and heir to Latveria.
  • Why We Picked It: While there are plenty of covers featuring Doctor Doom facing down the Fantastic Four, for our money it doesn’t get any better than this classic cover drawn by Marvel master John Byrne.

9. Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #10

  • Published: February 1985
  • Estimated Price: $25 USD (Raw High Grade)
  • Why It’s a Key: Key issue in the Secret Wars mini-series.
  • Why We Picked It: Most of the time when Doctor Doom faces down villains he walks away without a scratch (although he may lose the occasional Doom Bot from time to time). But this incredible cover art from Mike Zeck shows Victor beaten and battered, but still ready to throw down.

10. Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment (Graphic Novel)

  • Published: July 1989
  • Estimated Price: $40 USD (Raw High Grade)
  • Why It’s a Key: 64-page softcover original story. Doctor Strange becomes Sorcerer Supreme.
  • Why We Picked It: While technically this is a graphic novel, rather than a single issue, we chose it because of this awesome cover by Mike Mignola (of Hellboy fame), who also wrote the book, with interior art by Roger Stern. Because nothing beats two of Marvel’s greatest doctors teaming up to battle an army of magical monstrosities.

  • Published: September 1989
  • Estimated Price: $5 USD (Raw High Grade)
  • Why It’s a Key: Iconic cover.

12. Books of Doom #1

  • Published: January 2006
  • Estimated Price: $30 USD (Raw High Grade)
  • Why It’s a Key: Origin of Doctor Doom

13. X-Men #16

  • Published: August 2011
  • Estimated Price: $10 USD (Raw High Grade)
  • Why It’s a Key: Iconic cover.
